A helping hand when you need it

Local Welfare Assistance is emergency help, provided free of charge and funded by Mid Devon District Council for their vulnerable residents. Wiser£money deliver the Local Welfare Assistance Service on behalf of the Council and offer free, confidential and impartial services. Our team is based in the heart of the district at the council offices in Tiverton, ready to respond to requests for assistance. 

Dedicated Local Welfare Assistance staff are available Monday to Friday between 9.30am and 12.30pm.  New claims will be dealt with up to 12.30pm on the same day.  Referrals made after 12.30pm will be assessed the next working day.

All Local Welfare Assistance applicants are required to provide a bank/mini statement to establish eligibility according to the LWA guidelines.

Clients may be eligible for Local Welfare Assistance if they are at risk of, or are experiencing, crisis and:

  • Live in Mid Devon;
  • are on a low income;
  • have savings of less than £500; and
  • do not have access to any other forms of assistance.

The only eligibility for money, debt and benefits advice is that you are a resident of Mid Devon.

Referrals can be made by the individuals or through an external agency by calling Mid Devon District Council on 01884 255255, online at www.middevon.gov.uk or by dropping in to the offices at Phoenix House, Phoenix Lane, Tiverton, EX16 6PP.
